Police Eager to Investigate …

One Badass Cnidaria

July 21st, 2010

Seriously!

About 100 people were stung by a jellyfish at a beach in Rye on Wednesday, officials said.

The single jellyfish was believed to be responsible for all the stings.

Where’s My Violin?

July 16th, 2010

Because surely, these guys need some sad music.

A number of inmates at the New Hampshire State Prison in Concord are on a hunger strike to protest what they call stifling heat inside the prison.

Let’s get right on the phone with Mother Nature and tell her to cut it the hell out! Darn heat … can’t you see we need to be comfy down here?

Seriously now … I’m all for treating humans well, but I don’t think these folks are anywhere near death because of heat. And the logic of being overheated AND starving yourself? Kinda not-smart, right there. Guess that’s why they’re criminals.

Guess Where I’m Going Tonight?

July 1st, 2010

Right here.

I’ll be driving down there to see these folks in person to see if any of them are worth a vote. I know very little about the candidates. Here’s a basic rundown:

Jack Kimball – businessman, Tea-Party kind of guy for limited government, reduced spending, etc. Supposedly Chris Christie of the North. We shall see.

John Stephen – He’s got the GOP backing, apparently, which immediately makes me wary of him. Curious to hear what he has to say, I know very little about him.

Karen Testerman – I met her at the NH Tea-Party-Express rally in Concord a few months back. She was very pleasant to speak with. From what I understand, she’s “religious right” (whether that’s accurate or not, I don’t know, but I’ll find out tonight). If that’s the case, she wouldn’t have my vote.

At any rate, it should be an interesting night. I’ve been to political events and I’ve seen up close and personal plenty of politician-folk, but this is the first time I’ll be present at a debate. Very exciting!

Ticket & A Fine

May 13th, 2010

… but I’m not political royalty who hires a lawyer to fight my traffic tickets.

The attorney for Susan Lynch told the New Hampshire Union Leader that she was driving toward a Concord fire station in November as an ambulance was coming out. Chuck Douglas, her attorney, said she decided to go past the ambulance, rather than stopping.

I’m sure the poor sucker who needed the ambulance would understand that the wife of an elected official has important things to do and that “deciding to go past the ambulance” was just no big deal. As for the rest of us? Well, of COURSE we’d be scumbags. We’re not as important!

Nipple Clamps + 120 Volts

May 3rd, 2010

Ugh. Where to begin.

Superintendent John O’Connor told Foster’s Daily Democrat that he received Dover High School teacher Thomas Kelley’s resignation letter on Friday. The letter was dated April 16.

Kelley was put on paid leave after 18-year-old Kyle Dubois was hospitalized in critical condition in March when he attached two electrical clamps to his chest and another student plugged the cord into an outlet in Kelley’s electrical trades class. He was hospitalized for several days and has since returned to school.

There are two things at work here.

First, if the teacher was present while hazardous behavior was taking place, he absolutely had a responsibility to stop it. I don’t know all the details as to whether the teacher was there or not, and there are rumors that he offered the kid money to do it as a dare (though both have denied that). Basically, if you have a classroom, and there are kids in that classroom, yes, you have a responsibility to make sure that safe behavior nothing MONUMENTALLY STUPID takes place.

Students are in school to learn, not to pretend they’re filming an episode of Jackass.

Separately, and more importantly, I don’t care HOW young and stupid you are, you have GOT to know that hooking up cables to your nipples and sticking the other end into an electrical socket is … er … not advisable.

It’s not funny. It’s not cool. It’s stupid. Had he been killed, this kid would be the unquestionable favorite for a Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award. I’m happy to see that he wasn’t. The fact that he was in class and had a teacher does NOT spare him of all the ridicule he deserves for being so stupid as to strap cables to himself and get his inner Crank going.

This was a failure on multiple levels – a class environment that’s too casual with a dash of boredom, a pinch of ignorance, and a heaping helping of stupidity.

Climate vs. Weather, etc. etc.

April 28th, 2010

Yes, there’s a difference between climate and weather. In other words, weather patterns are far different in that they are larger trends than day-to-day climate. I get it.

However …

Global Warming Believers will use every slight fluctuation in day-to-day temperature in order to justify their belief that we’ll all melt and drown within 50 years.

I give you … my backyard this morning:

That’s about a foot of snow. It’s April 28th.

Two days ago I was out there in shorts mowing the lawn.

Two days ago I was driving around with my top off the Jeep, soaking up some sun as I was driving around.

Two days ago nearly every window in the house was open for fresh air.

We have a greater chance of being vaporized in 50 years by telekinetic alien cyborg octopi armed with particle-accelerating laser cannons than we do from driving SUVs and running air conditioners.

Tea Party Pics! From 4/13!

April 15th, 2010

So on Tuesday my family and I cruised on down to Concord, NH to catch the Tea Party Express and see what’s what. I just wanted to share some of the good signs and fine folk we came across.

TP Rally

There’s a good shot of the crowd from the steps of the NH Historical Museum. This was just as we arrived, about a half hour before the speakers began. At it’s peak, I’d peg the crowd at about 150 or so people. A good showing considering a Tuesday afternoon and the fact that the next day was the rally in Boston with Palin attending, so no doubt people wanted to attend that one if they had to make a choice.

TP Rally

Yeah, good luck with that.

TP Rally

Heh.

TP Rally

Tea parties – they’re not just for right-wing racist redneck domestic terrorist bigots anymore!

TP Rally

One of a couple of Rand signs present this day. Good to see, and timely.

TP Rally

But … but … that’s against the narrative!!!

TP Rally

Little bit of NH flair for you. I think the “Free” part is what they don’t understand.

TP Rally

Vonderful sign, Comrade!

TP Rally

I hate that sign. Seriously. Bad pun! No cookie!

TP Rally

Theme of the day right there!

Some other random goings-on. I met Michael Holler, the author of The Constitution Made Easy. Picked up a copy for ten bucks and got him to sign it for my son, “Next in line in a family of Patriots!”

He’s a great guy and I love what he did – particularly for younger readers. Every left page in the book is a page of the Constitution, and side-by-side on the right is a more modern and simplified translation. It’ll be an excellent resource.

When I stopped by his booth some old hippies were giving him a hard time, “Where in there does it say Bush was allowed to send troops into Afghanistan!?” they chided. His response was excellent, “Where does it say Obama can keep them there?”

He was firm with them. Clearly, they weren’t interested in the constitution, they were just interested in being all brave and liberal in the midst of a peaceful rally.

I also met the designer of the 2nd Revolution Flag! I first saw these on the 9/12 march in DC and thought they were pretty cool.

And we ran into Karen Testerman and had a nice talk with her. I don’t know much about her, but she was very nice to talk with. She said she’d love to come up to our neck of the woods in Northern NH and meet with any crowd large or small. I don’t know if she has a chance against what seems like a John Lynch steamroller, but stranger things have happened (see: Jersey, New).

We also saw a band or two of roving liberals. One of which was filming everything and wearing a red and yellow “CCCP” shirt that no doubt he paid some capitalist scumbag about $20 for in order to display to the public at large how positively retarded he is.

Anyway, it was a great day with the kids, there was no rock-throwing, racial-slur shouting, assassination signs, or anything other than a bunch of ticked off folks who can’t wait until November.
