Bersa Thunder in .380, .40, or 9mm for NY CCW!
Angry Patriot is writing about the odyssey that is getting a CCW permit in the state of NY. Holy SHIT, people:
All my NY Paperwork is done. Two sets of prints for the county I live in (its the county Judge that grants CCW licenses), one set of prints for the NICS check, and one set of prints for NY State in Albany.
That’s right…4 sets of prints.
Geeeeeeeeez. Here in NH … no prints. Ten bucks and I had the carry permit in two days.
There’s more to this legal circus …
Copy of my Drivers License and Voter Reg Card. (NY State Requirement) I need to show that I can, in fact, operate a motor vehicle and am registered to vote in said county, thus proving that I’m a resident of said county where I’m applying for a CCW from the Judge in the county of my residence.
It’s sad that we’re not this strict with voting. Considering the content of our Constitution and the stupidity of most constituencies, there should be more stringent controls on who can vote (like, not being a dumbass) and less on defending oneself (like not having to submit four sets of fingerprints, stool samples and your first born son) … but I digress. Go read the whole thing - it just might be a sign of things to come in your neck of the woods.
AngryPatriot needs some help, too:
So, the only thing left now is to wait, and decide what I want to buy once its approved. I’ve settled on a Bersa Thunder make/model. Can’t decide between the .380, .40 S&W, or 9mm version. Any suggestions in that regard, anyone? New York State prohibits the full-sized Bersa .40 (and also the 9mm, I believe) because they are double-stacked magazines. NY limits the number of rounds in the mag to 10, or 9 in the mag, 1 in the breech.
I’ve never handled a Bersa - anyone have some suggestions? Help a Veteran out, will you?

I dunno how to comment on his blog, but the Bersa Thunder .380 is more-or-less a knock-off of the Walther PPK. I might suggest that pistol only because it’s small enough to pocket carry meaning he can conceal it 365 even in the warmest days in New York in a wide range of rigs. Then decide if he wants to move up to a bigger caliber for heavy carry days.
If he has the coin, I’d further recommend a Kahr like yours. I’m working on getting one into Mass right now!

The Bersa Thunder 9 is a good pistol. A very good value for the coin it costs.

I carry the 9mm Firestorm as an off duty weapon. With modern ammo it’s a good choice for defense. Same caliber we carry on duty.
