Exploding Glocks?

First I’ve heard of it.

WINTER HAVEN | The Police Department is ditching $38,000 worth of guns after two .45-caliber GAP Glock Model 37 pistols exploded in separate training incidents a year a part, causing minor injuries to an officer and a cadet.

Ditching? Hmmm.

The department tried to work out a solution with Glock. The gun’s Georgia-based manufacturer offered to swap out the nearly 2 1/2 -year-old guns if the department paid the company $10,000. But Police Chief Mark LeVine said that is unfair.

I don’t have a Glock. I don’t necessarily dislike them, just chose something different for my own carry gun. That being said, all I’ve heard about them is that they’ll go bang when you pull the trigger and have excellent reliability. So what is it, you Glock fans out there? Just a case of them not cleaning the darn things, bad ammunition, or just a case of crappy luck?

I’ve heard that the Glock Kaboom issue generally is restricted to large caliber guns, is related to the fact that the chamber is not fully supported and usually (but not always) involves reloads.

There would have to be more information provided in this issue to determine whether this might indicate a problem with the firearms or operator error.

By the way…here’s some info on the Glock Kaboom phenomenon:

So there’s a kB issue of some kind there, but it could be a number of factors. Either way, asking for free replacements is pretty ridiculous. If my lawnmower spits blades out at 75 mph and beheads my neighbor’s kitty after 2 and a half years of use, I doubt John Deere would just send me a new one - regardless of whether there was a loose bolt or I just never cleaned the darn thing.

I reload for my Glock 29 (10mm. Way up there on the power scale). I do not worry about kB’s as they are rare as hens’ teeth if you are careful with your brass.

Yes, there is a bigger chance of injury due to case head separation, but the “unsupported” portion is what causes the Glock to feed regardless of circumstance. I’ve never had a jam from a Glock, ever.

I’m no fanboy. I’d buy other pistols in a heartbeat. But the reliability of the Glock is impressive.
