I'm not familiar with this source paper or its bias, but semiautomatic is a perfectly legitimate and accurate way of describing a handgun. Knowing the type of handgun is not necessary for my understanding of the topic, but describing a pistol as semiauto or revolver is no different than saying whether a car crash involved a minivan, SUV or sedan.
