Where Candidates Stand On Gun Control

From FREEP:

Hillary Clinton

Law-abiding citizens should be able to own guns but laws are needed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Cosponsored legislation to reinstate for 10 years the assault weapons ban.

John Edwards

Has said protecting gun owner rights and working to stop gun crimes can both be achieved. Opposes protecting gun makers from lawsuits holding them liable for gun violence. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.

Mike Gravel

Supports Second Amendment but believes potential gun owners should be licensed and properly trained before they can own a gun. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.

Dennis Kucinich

Supports national ban on handguns. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.

Barack Obama

Wants tighter background checks on gun buyers, making gun locks mandatory, and holding parents criminally responsible for children who injure someone with a gun found at home. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.

REPUBLICANS

Rudy Giuliani

Has been backing off past support for strong national gun control laws, saying what worked in New York City may not work elsewhere, especially in rural areas. Spokesman’s statement on assault weapons ban: “The best way to deal with gun crime is to prosecute the criminals and enforce the laws already on the books.”

Mike Huckabee

Said he supports Second Amendment and opposes laws that would restrict gun ownership for law-abiding citizens. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban. Opposes expansion of Brady Bill or ban on any type of ammunition.

Duncan Hunter

“We must vigorously defend against all attempts to chip away at the Second Amendment.” Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.

John McCain

Opposes gun control, calling it “a proven failure in fighting crime.” Opposes waiting periods to buy firearms. Has supported legislation requiring gun makers to include trigger locks with their products. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.

Ron Paul

Says Second Amendment forbids government from infringing upon right to own weapons. Would seek to repeal all federal gun control legislation. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.

Mitt Romney

Calls Second Amendment “one of the most basic and fundamental rights of every American.” Says Washington needs to distinguish between lawabiding gun owners and criminals who use guns. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban but would consider regulation of weapons of “unusual lethality or power.”

Fred Thompson

Says gun control doesn’t reduce crime and prevents law-abiding citizens from defending themselves. Voted against requiring background checks at gun shows. Voted to kill amendment to make it illegal for gun dealers to sell handguns without providing trigger locks. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.

As if it wasn’t obvious already … Compare and contrast something like Edwards (Soooooooooo happy that malodorous hunk of legislative crap has absolutely no shot) and Thompson. Romney and his “unusual lethality or power” is code speak for, “anything that looks scary”.

Thanks for laying that out. I hadn’t heard Huckabees thoughts before. What is so difficult to understand about how useless gun control legislation is. I know that not everyone is a gun enthusiast, but we’re talking about common, rational sense for cryin’ out loud.
I’m no medical doctor, but just because the sun can give me skin cancer, doesn’t mean I should seek the means to create a permanant eclipse for everyone else .
Sorry, that may not be the greatest analogy, but I’ve had the flu!

    Yo Angus!

Chicken soup for you! What really gets me about it is how quick our elected officials are to wipe their collectivist backsides with pages of the Constitution. Imagine a world under Kucinich. Yeeeesh.
