Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Behind It
I put up a post on this just a day or three ago and more details have come to light.
Wonder if Ceasefire PA has anything to say about this. Oh, nevermind.
This is one of the most negligent cop stories I’ve heard. It’s sickening really. Do as I say, not as I do, indeed. Now repeat after me, “Be sure of your target, AND what is behind it.”
“As soon as everyone said ‘Happy New Year!,’ bullets were flying through the house,” said Clinton Rogers, 30, who lives in the 5600 block of Boyer Street, where the party turned to chaos. He said he was near the front door holding his 3-year-old daughter, Camirah, when the gunfire erupted and door fragments struck him in the face.
And unfortunately, that’s nothing …
Within seconds, four of the guests were injured: one a 9-year-old boy grazed by a police bullet, another a 33-year-old man now in a medically induced coma.
I think it’s fair to cover the circumstances so we can all understand why police are often NO MORE QUALIFIED than your average gun-owner when it comes to making decisions under stressful situations.
1) Police receive a report about gunshots on New Year’s Eve.
2) Police arrive and find someone shooting a .45 into the air - just a few minutes before midnight.
3) They tell the suspect to stop (I’d guess with their guns drawn, though that’s unknown).
4) Suspect points the weapon at the police and then takes off inside the house.
5) One officer - a 5 year veteran - George Marko - fires ELEVEN SHOTS into the house at the fleeing suspect.
Now this detail:
Towandaa Austin, 18, a neighbor, said she was outside and yelled at police: ” ‘Stop shooting! There’s kids in there!’ They said shut the f- up.”
That’s it. Boy that’s just nice. Happy New Year. Now shut the fuck up so I can load this house full of lead regardless of who is inside.
Again … “Be sure of your target, and what’s behind it.”
Police said only Marko fired, shooting 11 rounds from his 9mm Glock.
At what, damnit?
And now we get to the saddest part of this story.
In the East Germantown shooting, the injured included Nyger Page, 9; Abebe Isaac, 33, in a coma after being shot in the face; and Michael Johnson, 32, who was shot in the side and remains stable. The gunman arrested Tuesday night, Dontate Mitchell, 21, also was shot in the arm.
Take his badge. Fire him. Throw him in jail. If it were a “citizen” that did this, they’d be absolutely crucified by Philly politicians. They’d be the poster-child for the eeeeeevil gun lobby. But it’s a cop. So he gets “administrative leave.”
And if it’s not keystone-cops enough for you, we have this:
Even worse, police admitted yesterday, they arrested the wrong man and let the right man go.
They thought they got the gunman who illegally fired shots in the air at midnight and then pointed the gun at police. Instead, they arrested a guest who had been playing pool in the basement. Tuesday night, they arrested the actual shooter, they said.
There are no words in the English language to describe how incredibly negligent this behavior was. Shootouts in the streets, indeed.
Kid shot? Check. Let the perp go? Check. Arrested wrong man? Check. Bystander shot in the face? Check. In a coma? Bonus Check. “Shut the f-up, we know what we’re doing?” Check. What a winner.
And this story:
The incident remains under investigation by Internal Affairs - as does last year’s probe into the similar shooting.
In that case, Bryan Jones, 20, was shot to death when he went to pick up his nephew in Overbrook on New Year’s Eve. Gunshots were fired at midnight, and police believed the suspect ran into a back alley near the 1700 block of 59th Street.
Ginsburg said people began running, either from the police or to escape gunfire. At the time, police said they thought Jones had pulled a gun, but later found he was unarmed.
“A police officer followed him on foot and just shot him in the back of the head,” Ginsburg said. “He was just trying to get out of a dangerous situation.”
Next time they try to take your rights away and convince you that the Police will protect you, remember these stories.
UPDATE: But Wait … There’s More!
