Fuzzy Math

Are you kidding me?

Yes, I’m an American, but I’m one of the increasingly small minority of Americans who does not, never has and never will own a gun. I know the statistics. I know that if I own a gun, the chances of a member of my family or me being shot and killed goes up by 1,700 percent.

Right. And the chances you survive a violent encounter without any kind of a weapon is about negative five bazillion percent.

Idiot.

OK, I own 15 firearms,so my chances are increased by 255,000 percent. I should have been killed years ago!

Holy crap you’re like the grim reaper! People probably just drop dead when you walk near them!

    Well, no shit.

If I don’t own a gun, the chances that a family member will be shot by a non-existent object is zero. By owning a gun (and storing it responsibly), the chances increase to something greater than zero, say, 0.00000000000000014%. Mathematically speaking, that’s an increase of infinity percent!!!!!

    AAAAGH!!!!!!!!

    Rosie, hold me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Frickin’ moron.

Likewise, if I don’t own a pool, the chances of one of my kids drowning in it are zero percent. Simply by getting a swimming pool, I increase the odds by a factor of infinity.

    Duh.
